On The Farm

Nature is so abundant. With all of the rain and heat, our apple trees are nearly bent to the ground. I’ve recruited neighbors and friends to come help themselves so we don’t lose branches like we did a few years back. When I was a child, my family always chose the hottest day of the year to do canning—looks like i’ll be carrying on that tradition!

One of our barn cats, Lester, had surgery last week to remove an infected eye. After trying for a month to help his infection clear, there was so much damage to the retina that there was no other choice. He has been so accepting of the cone and of being inside. He has a week left on it before the stitches are removed and he can go back to his barn. We relieve him of the cone a few times a day and give him lots of scratching, loving, and an opportunity to bathe himself. His buddy, Charlie, really misses him.

Animal tip

If you have an animal that needs a sling to manage stairs, going outside, or recovering from a procedure/surgery that prevents the back end from working properly, here’s a tip. When Noodle, our dog, had back surgery, his back legs were not fully functional for about 3 weeks. The veterinary hospital wanted $75 for a heavy duty sling, and the pet supply store wanted $40. Neither sling fit either our budget or our dog, so this is what I did.

I took a sturdy canvas market bag and slit the narrow sides with scissors. I then sewed a hem, folding the cut sides in, which also gave a bit of padding. Voilá. I had a light sling with handles that we could slip into a pocket or pack easily, and easily slip under the dog’s belly to lift him, helping him to walk outdoors, do a few stairs on the porch, and relieve himself.

After teaching animal communication and shamanic practice for nearly 15 years, I have found that there is a need to provide additional support to people who want to work with animals. Because of CoVid

Clouds

I am a cloud watcher from way back. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by shapes, textures, color—the art of the sky. For the past three years, I have been amazed, entertained and comforted by my membership in the Cloud Appreciation Society
